Biology:) A Big Test or Lovely Subject

Saturday, May 29, 2010. Our senior high school - SMA Xaverius 1 did two exams for eleventh grade. They are Biology and Religion.

But the subject which make the students afraid is just Biology :)

We have to master the lessons about Digestive System, Respiratory system, Excretory System,  Reproductive System, Nerve System, Sensory System, Hormone System and the last Immune System. For each lessons we should master the meaning, the organ, the disease, and the process which will be in the human body based on the lessons. Well, it is not really complicated for the readers because it looks easy and just so so but as a student of that school we need to study very very hard because this is the last test for Biology. Why should be Biology? Actually, I do not even know the answer why every students think that Biology is such a killer subject and definitely they will study hard for this subjects because they do not want to take the remedial test for this subject. In addition, this kind of action will be done by the student i their daily test. The will study for each lessons from many books and even they will look for the test from our senior. Yeah, it is quite unbelievable for you all but it is what we done a day or two days before the test. Okay let's go back to the semester test

Actually, the day before the exam, we had our holiday for Waisak day but I did not use it as efficient as I can. I still browsed Internet, wrote my blog, and still kept play with my younger brother. Well, it such a bad thing to do.

The next day, on Waisak Day, I had a Biology course and I learnt about the lessons of Biology. There, we answered fifty multiple choices, which we have done before as Try Out. After that, I got home and enjoyed my lunch. I still kept relaxed without thinking about what will happen the next tday. I tried to think that it would be very easy for me because I have answered fifty multiple choice and I have read the last year's questions tests for Biology. Yeah!!! Quite weird... I started to study after I had my dinner around 7 p.m. I studied seriously and I have just realized that I still had 3 lessons to master. "Oh my Good Lord!!!", "Thank you for remind me this." I studied seriously until 9 a.m. And the next morning, I set alarm to 4 a.m. Exactly, on that time I wake up and tried to study again.. It totally made me tired :(

The time for exam came...

I went to the class after the proctors unlocked the door of our class. My heart bist so fast because I was nervous with what would I see on the question paper - I never feel like this on another exams :(
The test flew so slow for me because it seemed that my friends did it with a long answer while I just answered with a short and simple answer. It seemed to me they really matered the lessons.
I got out from the room and asked my friend who has finished, too. Yeah, they said they did not really answered it with a long answer.

But I still do not even know why students in my school really love biology? Or they just think Biology is always be a big and killer test?
Yeah!!! The answer is simple. Biology is a nice lesson but the test is a big and even killer test :))

From an Interview to Descriptive Essay

What will come to your mind if you heard someone interviewing others in order to make an essay? I know it should be many answers for that and of course some of you may think who will be the interviewer, an actor, actress, entertainer, a very successful person such as Oprah Winfrey. But in this case I have interviewed a new American English Native Speaker in my school. The participant of Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, Rajiv Jayadevan has been chosen as my source of doing this descriptive essay. Actually, the requirements asked to interview someone who really influence our life such as parents, idol, or somewhat but my advisor of this competition asked me to write about Mr. Rajiv Jayadevan. I can not say anything since he was a new teacher in my school and absolutely become an over year idol in my school.

Well, it is quite unbelievable for me as a student of that school because the new teacher never got such a very good response from the student like what he got.

As usual I went to the library in order to find him. It was busy Monday (November 2009). But he was not there. I tried to ask one of his students who also like to practice their English with him. They said he was in teachers room, so I went to that place and found him there. I asked him to get out from teachers' room and he did it. I started my conversation...

Me : "Sir, Youth Camp asked me to write a 400 words descriptive essay and I choose you as the object, can I write what I wanna write about you?"
Mr. Raj : "Sure. I can tell you my hobby. I love running, drawing, and ..... (Well, I don't really remember what he told about his hobby)
Me : "Hmm.. I think what I'm gonna tell is your physical appearance"
Mr. Raj : "Oh, my height is 5 f 9 and my weight is 165 pounds (check it out on my descriptive essay bellow :) )
Me : "OK, now, let say that you are handsome (he shew his sweet and big smile, LOL) and I think what make you handsome is your eyes, but I can not describe your eyes"
Mr. Raj : (still with his gorgeous smile) "I have brown eyes", "But you see me everyday so that it will not be a big problem for you. I think 400 words is not too much. It is only three or four paragraphs
Me : "OK! I think that is all. Thank you, Sir!"
Mr. Raj : "OK! See you!"

Yeah, it was a short dialog but from that short dialog I can write a descriptive essay which contains 400 hundred words. It is my essay!!!!

English Teacher of SMA Xaverius 1 Palembang
Outline:
1. General Statement
Ø Thesis statement: Rajiv Jayadevan got great responses from many students in SMA Xaverius 1 Palembang because of his nice personality and his good physical appearance.
2. A little thing about Rajiv Jayadevan
3. Physical appearance
4. Personality
5. Conclusion
32 American students were chosen randomly from their university to be an English Teacher in Indonesia. They followed one program, called FULBRIGHT. One of the followers was sent to Palembang, South Sumatera (SMA Xaverius 1, located on Jalan Bangau) as an ETA (English Teaching Assistant). His name is Rajiv Jayadevan. Rajiv Jayadevan got great response from many students in SMA Xaverius 1 Palembang because of his nice personality, and his good physical appearance.
Rajiv Jayadevan, who loves running very much, comes from the family of four and he is the last of two. This handsome guy with his nice brown eyes was born in India, March 13th, 1987. Besides running, the boy who is Indian but spends his whole life in New York is also interested in drawing scenery and beautiful view. He also likes reading non-fiction books especially about medical. He likes reading book about medical because he plans to continue his medical study as soon after he goes back home to New York.
Great responses were gotten especially from the girls because Rajiv is the first English Teacher who comes from other country (USA). Another reason that make that kind of responses came to him is his physical appearance. He has a body which can be categorized as an ideal body because his height is 5 feet 9 (equals 1, 79 meters) and his weight is 165 pounds (equals 74, 8 kilograms). Not only his ideal body, but his handsome face also takes many girls attentions in that school. Many girls said that he is handsome because of his big and brown eyes, while others said that his pointed nose is the main factor that makes him look handsome.
His good physical appearances are the only reasons which make him got a great response. The other reason is his nice personalities. At first, I thought that Mr. Rajiv was an arrogant guy. Indeed, he is quite friendly because he welcomes many students, who want to improve their ability in speaking English. Besides friendly, he is also a good teacher. According to the students there, Rajiv has made them love English very much. Not only that, Rajiv also made them enthusiast in English lesson.
From the short description above, we can say that Rajiv Jayadevan is an ETA (English Teaching Assistant) in SMA Xaverius 1 Palembang, who got great responses from the school, especially the students because of his personality traits and his good physical appearance.

First impression talking with American English Native Speaker

"It was totally confusing for me to begin interviewing one of the participant of Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship. Exactly, Mr. Rajiv Jayadevan is the participant of Fulbright ETA who is placed in my school. Well, it was not such a big problem but my first impression of him told me that he was an arrogant and mean teacher."
Yeah!! I can not do anything. Since, I got assignment to write about him in a form of Descriptive Essay which will be used as my composition in one of the program called Youth Camp. That is one of the program which is enable the participant to introduce their local culture to the other participant who come from another country such as Philippine, Singapore, Malaysia, and China. All of us will meet in London and continue our trip to Paris.

At first (on November 2009), I asked my friend to open the conversation and she did it. I began with a usual way

Me : "Sir, I need your help. Can you help me?"
Mr. Raj : "Sure!" "How can I help you?" (my first impression was quite wrong. He responsed it with a very gorgeous smile)
Me : "I need to interview you after we finish our school!" (Well, it was not a good English, he was a bit confused)
Mr. Raj : "You mean after the school over"
Me : "Yes!"
Mr. Raj : "I plan to go home earlier today. So, maybe tomorrow. Can we?"
Me : (I got stuck because I should submit my assignment on that day. I was just smiling at him and my friends who accompany me to the library. Yeah, he is always in the library during the break)
Mr. Raj ; "So you wanna today?" (It seemed he understood with what I mean)
Me : "Yes"
Mr. Raj : "Okay! I will be in the teachers room. Just come in to find me there"
Me : "Okay, thank you sir!"

After I talked with him, the bell which mean the time for break was over rang. So, we went back class. On the way, I talked with my friend

Me : "Do you think that he is handsome?"
Vivi : "Yeah! I like his red lips"
Wini : "I love his brown eyes"
(I thought about their answer and imagine his red lips and brown eyes, but I didn't think that he was handsome like what my Friend thought)

The teacher who would teach us came in class and began our lesson. It was the last period of our class on that day. The bell rang and all students prepared to go home while me, Vivi and Wini went to the teacher's room to find him. Exactly, he didn't forget about our deal.

Me : "Excuse me, sir!"
Mr. Raj : "Oh, yes! One second!" (At first I didn't know about the meaning of "one second" after that he asked me to sit next to him, o the other teacher's desk)
Me : (I directly began my interview because I hate teacher's room very much. There are some reasons my I hate it very much!) "So, what program do you join?"
Mr. Raj : (From his eyes I knew that he was confused with what I did, I directly begun my interview. *Sigh!) "Well, actually what this interview for?"
Me : (I was a bit shocked with his question) "Hmm... I got an assignment from my course to interview you."
Mr. Raj : "Okay. I was chosen randomly from my university to join one program called "FULBRIGHT"" (He kept explaining but I can't write it all on this blog because I forgot his real explanation :) )
Me : "What make you want to be placed in Palembang?"
Mr. Raj : "Well, actually I didn't choose Palembang but I chose Indonesia. It is because I never visit Indonesia before so I want to see how Indonesia is."
Me : "Oh I see!! Hmm... I heard many people said that you're Indian. Is that right? (Well, it was out of topic, I just wanna know it. LOL!!)
Mr. Raj : "Well, my parents are Indian but I spend my whole life in New York"
Me : "Oh" (I was confused what I was going to talk I asked my friends to give me the comment but no one did it to me. Well, it was okay friend :D ) "Okay, I think that's all, sir!
Mr. Raj : (He seemed not believe that I wanted to finish my interview) "That's all?"
Me : "Yes! If there is some more questions, I will find you in library."
Mr. Raj : "Okay! I'm glad I can help you!"
Me : "Thank you, Sir!"
Mr. Raj : "You're welcome!"

Well, it was quite hard for me to make myself felt comfort and enjoy to talk with him. I do not know why, but I think it was because I thought he was arrogant and mean. It is quite amazing that I can get informations. Since that time I tried to practice my English with him.. Yeah! Slow but sure, I can enjoy talking with him :)
